New research from the Financial Services Unit of Siemens (SFS) has calculated the estimated capital investment between now and 2020 in urban infrastructures – cities and towns – in ten sample countries across the world. The billions of Euros of capital expenditure required in urban development cannot be funded from the public purse alone. Private sector funding will play an increasingly pivotal role in financing the essential investment. To access the funds that will be needed for the development of urban centres, cities are using a number of financing tools ranging from 25-year Public-Private Partnerships, to five-year asset finance.
